ABOUT CÉLESTE CEBRA
Céleste Cebra is a photographic artist from Sydney, Australia who currently resides in snowy Chicago, Illinois, USA. In 2015, she graduated with a BFA in Photomedia from the National Art School, Sydney. Cebra is currently undertaking her MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Céleste Cebra is currently contemplating a range of issues surrounding urbanity and walking in Chicago relative to public and privately owned spaces. A preliminary iteration is her series The Walks (2017).
In early 2017 Cebra unveiled a series of works created during her artist residency at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and subsequent travels, for her inaugural solo exhibition Quotidian Metropolis (March - April).
An underlying theme of Cebra's work is the movement of people through interstitial spaces, the oddity of such spaces when void of human presence and also how the human figure can activate spaces. This investigation stems from Cebra's photographic series Interstitial Interiors (2015) which examined transience, flow, transitional zones and the ritual of the pedestrian commute in institutional interiors. The series is comprised of large scale composite digital images printed on archival photographic paper.
Preliminary samples of work including Dérive (2014), Spilt Milk (2014) and Splash, Disperse, Swarm (2014), Unfixed (2014) and Triplicity (2014) all sought to grapple with the photographic medium and it's relation to Cebra and her experience of the world via the camera lens.
As an emerging artist Cebra's practice constantly evolves and seeks to marry influences from the previous decades to her contemporary explorations.
